Welcome to the Robotics Society 2025-26!!

Thank you all for coming to our first session of the year last week!! It was a great start with fierce competition between teams. Congratulations to the teams Duck & Ramen and The Group for winning a £20 off voucher for Maki & Ramen!!
There was a heroic effort from the other teams, and we hope you had an amazing time and the opportunity to connect with your future teammates.
In case you missed it…
Before the workshop, Bruce, Rory and Louis gave an overview of the events and plans for this academic year, including workshops, competitions, socials, and sponsors.
In a nutshell, for our very first workshop this semester we’re taking off to the skies -you’ll be building your very own radio-controlled aeroplane! We will be working alongside AeroWatt since they are more experienced in the aviation sector.
Throughout the year we will be running:
· Crash courses for GitHub.
· Hopefully, in collaboration with the Maker Society, a PCB design class where you’ll learn how to design and where to manufacture your own Printed Circuit Board (PCB)!
· There will also be drop-in sessions every month where people can discuss or show off their personal projects, help each other out with assignments or just chill.
· Training throughout the year! Ran by the GRID maker space, be the first to hear when further training opportunities become available, such as 3D printing, or laser cutting! Join our Discord to learn more!
Upcoming events:
· For this Wednesday’s workshop, we’ll be getting hands-on with Arduino and ultrasonic sensors to build a simple obstacle-avoiding robot—a primitive version of a Roomba. You’ll learn how sensors detect distance and trigger movement, giving your robot basic navigation skills and introducing you to real-world robotics concepts.
· We would also like to welcome you for a tour of the National Robotarium on Wednesday 24th of September, where you will meet roboticists and connect with businesses for potential internships, work or volunteer opportunities.
· Ever wondered how to avoid ruining someone’s life? On the 1st of October we will be hosting a GitHub crash course! Please join to find out how to use GitHub and collaborate with people to make their and your programming experience not hell. Any experience level is welcome as we will be starting off from the very beginning.
On a more competitive note, we’re also looking for students who are keen to join the Unibots26 team for regionals and nationals this year. If so, please let us know so we have an estimate of the people that want to join!
Finally, if you want to borrow any parts then you can do so through our website for only £5. For more information on this come to us on the next workshop and we will show you how to do it.
Up next we kicked things off with a fun introductory workshop where teams of four competed against each other to build the best mode of transport to carry their teams rubber duck as far as possible across a table. The two furthest-travelling designs won a £20 off voucher to be used at any of our sponsor’s Maki & Ramen restaurant.
This was a fun taster session where you got to experience a bit of a what it will be like to work as a Robotics Society team member.
For more events like this stay tuned by signing up to the Robotics Society to receive email updates, follow us on Instagram and Facebook and don’t forget to join our discord community where you’ll meet everyone from the team!
Lastly, I would like to thank our sponsor Maki & Ramen for making this all possible! They offer our members a lovely 20% discount, available via our mailing list, so sign up as a member today! This is an ongoing effort to get more companies interested, so do keep an eye on our Discord for any future events!
